Temporary resident visa (TRV)

Also called a visitor visa, it is required if you wish to travel to Canada to visit family, as a tourist or in some cases to conduct eligible business.

Visitors are subject to length of stay which in most cases is valid for a maximum of 6 months but can be shorter depending on circumstances.

Before immigrating to a new country, it may be advisable to apply for a visitor visa to explore the country and understand the culture before making a big decision to move.

There are two types of Canadian visitor visas; single entry and multiple entries.

Single entry visas are granted for a one time visit and mostly for a maximum of 6 months stay.

Multiple entry visas are generally granted for 10 years or more or just before the passport expires and allows you to travel to and from Canada with each stay for a maximum of 6 months.

General requirements

  • Have a valid travel document
  • Be in good health
  • Have no criminal or immigration related convictions.
  • Have enough money for your stay

Minors travelling alone must have a letter of authorisation signed by both parents / legal guardians. Minors travelling with only one parent/guardian must have a letter of authorisation from the non-accompanying parent or guardian.

Like most temporary applications, you should demonstrate to an officer that you have strong ties to your home country and that the purpose of visit is genuine. These are some factors that an immigration officer will be considering when assessing your application. Providing substantial proof that you have reason to return to your home country is imperative for the success of your application.

Electronic travel Authorization (eTA)

For individuals travelling to Canada via air from visa-exempt countries, you may need to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead of a temporary resident visa (TRV). This process is completed online and is simpler and faster.

If you are applying for an eTA, it will be linked to your passport and valid for up to five years or until your passport expires.

Once you have obtained an eTA, you can usually enter Canada for up to six months at a time; however, this is always at the discretion of an immigration officer and an eTA does not guarantee entry to Canada.

Extend your stay in canada

TRV /eTA holders are allowed to remain in Canada for up to 6 months. If you want to stay in Canada for longer, you must apply to extend your stay. You should submit your visitor record application no later than 30 days before your status expires. If your current visa/eTA expires while your extension application is still being processed, you may remain in Canada while waiting for a decision to be made. This is called ‘maintained status’. Your current immigration status will be valid until a new decision has been made on your application.
