Home 9 I want to Sponsor 9 Dependent

Do you want to sponsor your dependent child?

The intent of the family class immigration program is to reunite Canadian citizens and permanent residents with close family members. Canada wants to help keep families together. For this reason, sponsorship applications involving dependent children are given priority.

What is the canadian immigration definition of a dependent child?

To be eligible for sponsorship, children must meet the definition of a dependent child. Whether they are the biological or adopted child of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, a child is a dependent if they are:

  • Under 22 years of age and they are not married or in a common – law relationship.
  • Above 22 years and has been financially dependent on their parents before the age of 22 years and unable to financially support themselves due to a physical or mental condition.

As with all family sponsorship streams, both the sponsor and the sponsored child must meet eligibility requirements in order for the child to be granted permanent residence. For parents wishing to sponsor their child, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered as an Indian under the Canadian Indian act
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Not be in prison, charged with a serious offence, or be bankrupt

Parents will also be required to provide proof of the relationship with the child, be it through birth or adoption certificate. In addition to meeting the definition of a dependent child, the sponsored person must either be the biological child of the sponsor or the sponsor’s spouse, or the adopted child of the sponsor or the sponsor’s spouse.

Dependent child sponsorship minimum necessary income

In most cases, parents are not required to meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) for dependent children’s sponsorship. However, if a dependent child you are sponsoring has a dependent child of their own, you must meet the MNI, which is determined by the Canadian government each year.

Sponsorship undertaking

One of the requirements to sponsor a family member, is that you must submit a sponsorship agreement and undertaking with your application. It is a promise to financially support the person you are sponsoring.
