Federal skilled trades (FST) program:

FST program is managed under the express entry system and is ideal for candidates who want to immigrate based on being qualified in a skilled trade.

For the federal skilled trades program, skilled trades are organized under the major groups of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).

Groups 72, 73, 82 and 92, 622 & 633. See table below for details.

Minimum requirements to be eligible under federal skilled trades

  • Two years of full-time (or equivalent) work experience in a skilled trade within 5 years before applying (Canadian or foreign work experience in skilled trades in major groups of NOC B)
  • Proof of language proficiency through an approved test. CLB 5 = Speaking & Listening, CLB 4 = Reading & Writing
  • Job offer (LMIA approved) of full-time employment from up to 2 employers for at least 1 year or a Certificate of Qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial body.
  • Proof of funds – required, unless currently working in Canada on a valid work permit or have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
